“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. I sense much fear in you.”

The Phantom Menace may be a bit of the black sheep of the Star Wars saga, but there are still enough good elements in the film that make it fascinating to watch. The whole Trade Federation conflict is boring and messy, and just watching the opening crawl is exhausting. The film does start off reasonably well with Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi having to fight their way out of a Trade Federation spaceship. Unfortunately, things quickly go downhill after that when Jar Jar Binks and the underwater world are introduced.

Fortunately, the story quickly moves to Tatooine, where we meet a 12-year-old Anakin Skywalker. The story here is kind of flat and Jake Lloyd isn't the best child actor I've ever seen, but luckily we have podracing. Visually beautifully done and quite compelling too. The film is saved by the final battle on the planet Naboo with good action sequences and a fantastic lightsaber battle between Jinn/Obi-Wan and Darth Maul. 'Duel of the Fates' remains one of John Williams' best scores. The Phantom Menace has a lot of childish elements, bad dialogues, not the best Anakin and a story that is very separate from the other parts. But it also has Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn, a young Obi-Wan, podracing and strong lightsaber battles. The magic of the original trilogy doesn't come to life anywhere, but it's all entertaining.

Review !

I started a Star Wars marathon

I am beginning to appreciate this opener more and more than in the beginning. I thought this was the least part, but in the meantime that is certainly no longer the case.
