Evangerion Shin Gekijôban: Kyu plot

"What was destroyed can (not) be rebuilt."

It is fourteen years after the 'Third Impact'. The Angels are still attacking humanity. Shinji Ikari is rescued from the Evangelion Unit-01 and finds that the world has not changed for the better. Everything is in ruins, his former NERV allies are hostile to him, and Rei Ayanami, the girl Shinji risked everything for, is nowhere to be found. While trying to adjust to the new world, Shinji encounters the enigmatic Kaworu Nagisa. Together with him, they go in search of Rei and the terrible truth behind the Angels, NERV and the Evangelions.

Best yet.

Less spectacle and an unsatisfactory final? Just the opposite. The art style has again received a huge visual clean-up and the film definitely does that well. The intro is great and the ending is also megalomaniac. The saga behind the whole thing is pretty nonsensical (have to say that I used to be a bit more tolerant of things like that), but as a coat rack for some worldly destruction it is very suitable.

The middle section is, as usual, a bunch of uninteresting whine. Fortunately it all looks a bit better (there is more the recent Gainax style) but it doesn't really interest me. I don't think I ever will.

Keep part 4 coming. I really don't care about the whole bleating around Ikari, but when everyone gets into their suits and the mechas get to fight it out among themselves, this is a more than fascinating spectacle.

3.5*

The Third Impact', which occurred at the end of Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, devastates much of the Earth and decimates the human population. Shinji [Spike Spencer] and Kaworu [Jerry Jewell], whose lives have many parallels with Shinji's, survive the brutal battle, Rei [Brina Palencia] and Asuka [Tiffany Grant] are among the missing. Partly due to consultations in backrooms between what remains of those in power, a dichotomy arises about how to proceed. That mutual scheming offers The Angels an excellent opportunity to finish the job. Impressive action sequences and good work by the voice cast largely disguises the feeling of déjà vu. Still better than many similar films, but it is hoped that Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.01 Thrice Upon A Time manages to surprise more.
