Sleepwalk with Me plot

"A comedy for anyone who's ever had a dream. And then jumped out a window."

Matt and Abby have been dating since college and their relationship has fallen into a rut. So much so that marriage seems like the logical next step, but neither of them feel anything for that step in their lives. As a stand-up comedian, Matt doesn't have it easy either, he's been trying the same jokes for years that don't get him very far. At one point he tries something new with his career, and makes many jokes about his relationship. This catches on with the public and his career takes off. However, his relationship deteriorates and his sleepwalking becomes more frequent and dangerous.

Convincing Indie film about a thirty-something with little self-confidence who doesn't really know what to do with his life. At times it was all very painful to watch, but nothing really disturbing or unsympathetic.

The development of the main character remains fascinating and I must say that I regularly sympathized with him and could sympathize with him. Furthermore, the sleepwalking moments provide some funny images.

Surprisingly good movie.

As the main character found success in his joke telling, the film became more enjoyable. Before that, I had to think about what I actually had to laugh at in this comedy, except with that lifestyle, meddlesome old man, played by James Redhorn.

Birbiglia can count on my sympathy.

After seeing his latest special The Old Man and the Pool, I quickly absorbed and devoured all his stand-up work. Anecdotal, personal, honest and disarming and always with an excellent delivery, he always makes me laugh. How different is this with this film.

In terms of content, after the specials you are already reasonably aware of the events throughout the film, but that lack of surprise is not so much the problem. The format of film just doesn't seem like the best place for it.

The introduction of himself as narrator is a weak way to tie the whole thing together. The sleepwalking scenes do not convey the risk associated with his sleep disorder. His comedy routine is increasingly well received by the audience, but as a viewer you still feel a bit on the sidelines because there is no sense of momentum. And the love drama part is a plot line filled with doubts but without punch.

I'm glad Birbiglia has found his way as a comedian. On stage he can at least dress his personal anecdotes, doubts and reflections with the elements he masters, such as timing, diction and a certain interaction with the audience; the more rhetorical and linguistic aspects. He is not at home in the visual imagery of film, which I think is a shame because he is a great storyteller. It just didn't work out for me at all. 2*
