Bill Hayward is released on parole after serving eight years in prison. He returns home to his 11- and 15-year-old sons, who have been abandoned by their mother and left completely on their own. Unwilling to play father, a loveless Bill is determined to move on with his new life. Although Dean, the oldest boy, has managed to find a job and try to be a father to his younger brother, Bill's arrival brings them to the attention of Social Services. Dean forces his crippled father to stay to prevent the boys from being placed out of the house and under surveillance. Bill reluctantly decides to stay for one week. Despite never being raised by anyone himself, he quickly befriends his son Jimmy. With this new band, Bill begins to realize what he has been missing.
