Great movie that would have been even better with a little more playing time. And that was fine, because Chandor doesn't let a scene last too long and keeps the pace tight, without much happening. That's good. I really wasn't bored for a moment and the two hours were over in no time. Furthermore, the atmosphere is beautifully portrayed, especially the yellow-colored palette that reinforces a certain sense of authenticity. A number of scenes next to that really stand out, whether that's because of the build-up (second robbery) or just very clearly portrayed (the chase).

It's a shame that most supporting actors don't get enough playing time. Isaac in the lead role does get that and seizes that opportunity and creates a beautiful portrait of someone who wants to, but is opposed and can only slip into madness or depression. He brings this very nicely subdued - his looks are often enough for me. But the roles around him are also nicely filled, but they have too little time. Brooks and especially Oyelowo (he also in Selma) have a nice warm role and I would have liked to see more. However, it is Chastain who is really running out of time. She has an interesting role, and certainly her relationship with Isaac offers plenty of opportunities, but they are just not together enough to really crackle. So the film never really gets under the skin except for some moments, where, say, All Is Lost did. Therefore 3.5*.

A Most Decent Year.

Feeling a bit redundant after the last two reviews here. But I just throw it in too. What solidity!

Friend of mine thought this was the shit a while back. Had some Oscar heat hanging around him. I've wanted to see this before but never got around to it. Now I suddenly felt like a kind of Goodfella-esque gangster movie. Although the film does have a kind of gangster vibe to it, it never really does. After seeing the film I somehow thought, actually nice that this has not become such a film, but on the other hand the film is also a bit uninteresting. There are no real violent outbursts, there is no real threat that our protagonist will be killed, the only danger is that his deal will not go through. Not to mention I liked Isaac's character so much that I was really hoping for him to be okay, no.

I was curious about who was stealing his trucks. But that too was a bit of a fizzle. The acting was not exceptional. Also found the female supporting role a bit one-dimensional. And Isaac actually too. She's a bit mobster-minded, but he doesn't want to hear about it.

2.5 stars.

Impressive and somber without Chandor rubbing my nose in the mud, and the plot wraps things up as cleverly as it is surprising. A nice throwback to the socially conscious American cinema of the 1970s, with a great role by Isaac, and a Chastain who keeps up with him without any problems. The many dark shots, sometimes even just in normal interiors, may have fitted well with the theme and the era, but they didn't make the film any more pleasant to watch for me.
