The film tells the story of Sam Childers, a former drug dealer and gang member of the Hell's Angels who has converted to God. He founded an orphanage in Sudan in the 1990s. Afterwards, he formed a militia to prevent the children from ending up as child soldiers.

With such a title, poster and protagonist you can expect something different, but it turns out to be a biopic of one Sam Childers. The man and his actions were unknown to me, but after the opening scene a light started to burn. Last week's hype was called Kony and judging by the barbaric acts, these are his parts. Some attention to that monster isn't a bad thing, this movie clearly is. Butler isn't really the type to play a leading role like this and the religious slant isn't something that appeals to me either.
Still, those aren't even the biggest reasons why this is a goof. That is much more imprisoned in the forced storytelling and the many sentiments that keep popping up. In less than fifteen minutes the biker is introduced who eats everything, it takes nothing more than a pathetic help me to get him baptized and a little later you are looking at a huge good guy in Africa. It is all so rakish and thick that it already gnaws there. You hope that the film will calm down a bit, but the opposite is true with one artificial, soft scene after another.
Wife who has her say from the neighborhood supermarket, Rambo-like scenes; it cannot be hardened. Lots of weird, abrupt transitions too, not to mention the weepy music. Low points are the roles for the white aunt, the pathetic kid and the ex-junk when Childers goes on too. With Kony in mind. Terrible, though it may not come close to the idea that there is a great white benefactor walking around here and every African, save for one rebuttal, follows him like a tame sheep. In that sense, it's a damn bad movie too.

Reasonable film in which an ex-prisoner who has found God builds an orphanage in Sudan, ravaged by a civil war. A beautiful and true story with a captivating main character. Despite the somewhat too long playing time, it remains too superficial at some points. Gerard Buttler is well cast in the title role.

Friendly. The title Machine Gun Preacher, and the fact that Gerard Butler plays the lead role, put you on the wrong track. Because this is not a hard-hitting action film, but more of a drama film about a man who embraces religion and tries to create a better life for the children in Sudan. You have to take all that religious stuff for granted, but underneath there is an interesting story. Because of the mediocre script, that doesn't come out quite right, but the acting obscures a lot. Michelle Monaghan is always a plus.
