Tsotsi plot

"In this world... Redemption comes just once."

19-year-old Tsotsi lives on the streets of Johannesburg. Tsotsi means "gangster" in slang, but his real name and the memories of his past pushes Tsotsi away. He is very impulsive and violent and many people are afraid of him. Along with a number of others, Tsotsi lives off the street crime. When one night one of his gang members keeps asking Tsotsi about his past, he beats him up. He runs away and robs a woman of her car. A three-month-old baby is found in the car. The baby brings out a caring side in Tsotsi.

Well played and quite an interesting story. It's not entirely up to me. I generally don't like the action/crime/violence genre. I'm not very impressed, but I'll give it a pass, as I quite enjoyed this movie. A 6. 3*

Film that is partly captivating and perhaps needs to be seen again to find the real nuance in the shabby and sketched image.

Street rascal Tsotsi is followed and initially seems to think mainly of himself and his own ego. Something he got himself into quite a bit of trouble with and gets into a situation where every next step gets worse and worse. What is interesting is the caring side that emerges and the choice to want to take care of the child, a kind of coming of age and maturing starts. Later, a bit of confrontation and awareness also emerge. Also interesting is the attempt to break with the old life and the interaction he has with the helping young mother.

The film ultimately revolves around choices and convinces with its shabby slum and the difference with the better off. Nevertheless, I have trouble understanding certain choices because why does he cling so tightly to the child and not hand her over to someone who can take better care of her...?

Interesting film, not completely convinced, but a review with time.

A kind of Cidade de Deus, but set in South Africa instead of Brazil. Now, in many respects the townships are in no way inferior to the favelas of South America. Tsotsi, which also means 'gangster', is a fairly appropriate name for the rascal who plays the leading role here. He does not shy away from using violence during his thefts or robberies, even to the point of death ... In terms of content not comparable to Cidade de Deus, but in terms of setting.

This changes when he is cared for by a small baby during a carjacking. Although he feels uncomfortable, he takes care of the baby and it reminds him of his childhood or the lack of it. The film's weakness is Tsotsi's sudden turnaround or repentance. There is no real explanation and the metamorphosis can be called quite brusque. I was already struggling with it.

What is interesting is the further development of the plot when it becomes clear that this is not self-evident and that his environment - being his friends, but also the poor environment - exerts (negative) pressure on him. A film about repentance and penance, fine film, but not memorable.
