Strange I never voted for this.

I'm 100% sure I saw the movie in my MM period. The first hour I hardly knew anything about it, it is mainly the semi-scientific snooping scenes that have stayed with me from this film. Needless explanation for the whole Ringu phenomenon, there are more of those Asian suspense films that suffer from that.

Visually it remains drab. All very ugly shot, a bit on the level of the acting. Not all good. The soundtrack stands out. Clearly by Kawai and at times clearly more atmospheric than the rest of the film, which gives a rather weird effect. In any case, Kawai knows how to give some scenes some power.

Here and there a successful horror moment, although this film is never scary or exciting. But I'm afraid the Ringu series will never really suit me. Not my type of horror, especially when presented this way.

1.5*

What a misery. The very idea of investigating and explaining Ringu's background is already a hopeless mission. Some things should just remain a mystery. Preferably without sequels. So this is one of those movies that you can best banish from your memory. I honestly haven't even watched it. It was so boring that I couldn't keep my attention. In any case, nothing exciting had passed until then and that must have lasted until the last ten minutes. Well, there are many ways to better spend your time.

How do you cover up a genre film that originally wasn't much more than a ghost girl crawling out of television screens? Apparently, Ringu was part of a SF book series with several parts. A lot of quasi-scientific talk about what Sadako actually is, with the occasional creepy fragment to keep the spice in. Also something random next to it with other characters who suddenly have telekinetic powers. Part one was already exasperating because of the plot exposition and the excruciatingly slow build-up of tension; this sequel takes things up a notch with even more serious looking Japanese staring at each other and occasionally picking up startled objects. And Sadako? It also no longer peeks out from the shadows, but it almost only returns in semi-artistic, video clip-like scenes that are hardly scary or exciting. Only at the end can she throw her iconic figure on the protagonists, but it can't have a name.
