Beautiful pictures of desolate landscapes, local color and atmosphere have to compensate for what is nevertheless a mediocre narrative and a near absence of chemistry between the main characters (what heroes Redford and Newman were in that respect). Typically a contrived case of "what if Butch survived his stay in Bolivia" this film... For an actor who has made an art of expressing an often grumpy character only with looks and body language (and an impressive beard), the recently deceased Pulitzer Prize winner Shepard actually has too much text. The not bad twist half an hour before the end just about gets the film over the line.

Nice, doesn't reach the level of the old classics, there is a film audience sauce over it, but still a nice what if Butch Cassidy had not been killed in 1908, but 20 years later still lived anonymously in Bolivia. Sam Shepard as Butch Cassidy alias James Blackthorn who helps a young outlaw one more time to escape from his attackers.

Nineteen years after Butch Cassidy [Sam Shepard] and his friend The Sundance Kid were supposedly killed in a shootout with the Bolivian army, he has secretly built a life as a rancher there under his new name James Blackthorn. He wants to return to his homeland one last time, but gets involved in a conflict that forces him into an uneasy partnership with the young bandit Eduardo Apocada [Eduardo Noriega].
A solid western follows the formula of the better B-western. Shepard's engaging performance and Juan Ruiz-Anchía's beautiful cinematography make this a fine, but unremarkable, fodder for fans of the genre.
