Nice!

A movie that I wanted to see anyway, but I waited until it came on TV. Typical movie to watch with a beer and some snacks. Mind also at 0, and enjoy this brutal, but also funny sports film.

Admittedly, the role of Baruchel did not quite come out well because he does not fit in these kinds of films. Normally I like him, but here he was especially annoying. Scott, on the other hand, was really great. One of the funniest characters I've seen in ages.

It also starts nice, fast editing and catchy dialogues. Just about any dialogue from a wonderfully playing Scott is catchy and funny. Laugh regularly. It's nice that he can also play these kinds of roles instead of the annoying, sex-hungry layabout. (Stiffler)

Every scene on the skating rink was fun. Nicely shot at times, and with some brutal and bloody moments that make the sport seem just a bit more dangerous. Camera as puck, stick or spectator/player was also well thought out and draw you into the game.

There's nothing really boring anywhere, although the romance was perhaps just a bit too redundant. I actually watched it purely for sport, and then the romance is sometimes a bit too much. But otherwise the film is enjoyable and I was sad that it ended after some time.

Last fight between Schreiber and Scott, he may have been a bit short, but I did hold my breath. Great moment too. Yes, I think it's a successful film with a wonderful Scott, successful jokes and great moments on the ice rink. As far as I'm concerned, this is already the topper of the week for me.

Annoying.

Co-written by Baruchel, that greyish vanilla dude, who must have pinned this one down (and gave himself a nice foul-mouthed supporting role) to impress boyfriend Seth Rogen.

Humor seems to want to capture the adolescent swearing vibe of movies like This Is The End, Superbad, and Pineapple Express, but it feels too random, and thought out. Moreover, it is interwoven with a hollow love story and a rehash of a sports film.

The film tries very hard to be funny, witty and violent, but it comes across as insincere and easygoing. Many compilation scenes, many time jumps, little attention to characters, depth in dialogues or build-up in tension around the sport. The slo-mos and soundtrack are equally opportunistic.

The film lacks heart, and a searching Scott who does his best to portray an endearing main character is simply too thin. Some scenes on the ice (fight scenes excluded) are pretty well captured, Schreiber makes it fun and when the Russians started explaining the beach ball joke I had to laugh. Furthermore, it is overlooked. And quickly forgotten. 1,5*

Scott stars as Doug Glatt, who makes his living as a bouncer. Partly because of his demanding parents, he is not happy with his image as a stupid wardrobe, until an ice hockey coach - impressed by Glatt's way of working - offers him a contract as a goon for the local ice hockey team. Hardly able to skate, Doug quickly makes himself useful by beating anyone who tries to knock off super-talent Xavier LaFlamme [Marc André Grondin] to a pulp. The crowd soon praises him, the team starts to win, but not all players are happy about that. When Doug meets the also socially inept Eva [Alison Phil], Doug suddenly sees a very different future for himself. An eccentric mix of comedy, drama and bloodshed with a starring role by Scott, who can easily deal with his Stifler image. The romance between Doug and Eva makes up for it, as does Liev Schreiber's role as the goon of a rival team with whom Doug will have to fight at some point.
