The Thief of Bagdad plot
"GIGANTIC! The Wonder Picture of All Time!"
Abu meets a man who claims to be the real Prince of Baghdad. He has been left to his own devices by the evil Jaffar. Jaffar hopes to increase his power by marrying the breathtaking princess. For this, he keeps the childish king happy with presents. Abu and the prince try to stop Jaffar, but he then uses his magical powers.

Hooray for Technicolor! All those old color films from around 1940 always look particularly beautiful and colorful and so does this one! The Thief of Baghdad tells an entertaining story set in the classic Arabic setting with sultans and flying carpets. But it also features an epic battle with a spider and the biggest attraction is a giant escaping from a bottle. Anyway, enough ingredients for an entertaining film with very charming special effects!

I'm a big fan of Technicolor. It gave many films a warm and dreamy color. And the story from 1001 Nights is also extremely fascinating. Still, The Thief of Baghdad barely appealed to me. Despite the Technicolor, this has become an ugly film. Pastel colors everywhere that look great and the effects that were so innovative in 1940 are now unfortunately dated.
What remains is the story itself, which is not bad in itself, but not very creative. We have already seen many things from 1001 Nights better. Too bad, because many of them will undoubtedly be indebted to this film. Just think of the Disney film Aladdin, which clearly looks like The Thief of Baghdad.

Nice adventure film, in which many aspects are of course familiar (not just from the Disney version), but the genius has a less prominent role here.
Of course the effects are dated, but that is of less importance, yet this film often fails to rise above mediocrity and it sometimes looks too small-scale.
