An inconspicuous bank clerk (Ernst Deutsch) from a bank in a small German town, one day tries to break out of his bourgeois existence. He embezzles 60,000 Marks from his own employer to help a wealthy Italian client (Erna Morena). She laughs at his foolish act, which will have far-reaching consequences for himself.
