As so often, Pierre Richard plays the absent-minded type, tumbling from one crazy situation into another.

Not the best film with the French comedian, but at times it is still uncontrollably funny.

A still young Jane Birkin, of course, plays along smoothly in the absurd nonsense, which has its best moments in the first half hour.

A typical Claude Zidi comedy.

It is with some pain in my heart that I give the 2.5* because I have always had a soft spot for Pierre Richard. His clumsy, absent-minded and romantic characters are often unforgettable. However, over the years he could no longer let go of his character. The same character in La Course a l'Echalote but the story appealed to me less. Here Richard is an executive in a bank, who suddenly has to stand in for his director who goes on leave. He gets involved in a crime story about papers that are worth a lot of money. I found Jane Birkin annoying with her ugly British accent. For Pierre Richard it is just business as usual. Still, I enjoyed the theatrical finale where he cuts down pillars and also with the house that goes on fire, but it is a lesser film with him.

A film by Claude Zidi, who was particularly active in the 1970s and directed and wrote more comedies. Besides working with Pierre Richard, he also made several comedies with Louis de Funès. Zidi's comedies are similar. The characters are usually overblown and, through various misunderstandings or coincidences, end up in situations that then completely derail. La Course à l'Échalote is no different.

A film in which most of the humor is visual humor. Lots of slapstick. Wonderful. Much is funny. Not everything. Some scenes may have been very funny in the film's production year, but aren't anymore. For example, it's apparently considered very funny to have men dressed in women's clothing. So funny, in fact, that this gimmick is used in several scenes. I found them rather long-winded. Fortunately, most of the other scenes are funny.

The story is meaningless and serves only as an excuse to derail events. The film rushes at breakneck speed from one location to the next, from one crazy situation to the next. There's no stagnation in this film. Something is always happening. Pierre Richard is a good comedian and responsible for some delightful scenes. La Course à l'Échalote is a fun comedy that primarily offers visual humor and slapstick. It's humor I enjoy.
