A rather bizarre film by Bo Widerberg, whom I know from the excellent adaptation of a Beck detective novel (Mannen på Taket – I own the book, but haven't read it yet). It hovers somewhere between something resembling a biblical (re)telling, a folk tale, and a pitch-black, depressing drama with some surprising excesses. I can imagine some might find it boring; it is structured as a straightforward drama with characters that are anything but cheerful, but I love this atmosphere. With the 'text cards' interspersed throughout, Widerberg seems intent on building upon Swedish film classics of yesteryear regarding social dramas, and he does so with gusto as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know why, but I didn't expect Stellan Skarsgard to play a villain, but he does it very, eh… good-naturedly… (as far as possible, anyway)

One of the nicer films I've seen lately; typical of me, it certainly isn't a recent one. But thanks to Netflix, so it gets to stay for an extra month!
