Haevnen

After three films I can say that Susanne Bier and I are a good match. You can't call her films subtle, and sometimes she wants to respond a little too much to the viewer's feelings. But Bier always makes sure that you are drawn into the story, and she manages to strike a chord every time.

Haevnen is about revenge and forgiveness, major themes that Bier manages to reduce to the choices the characters have to make. Obviously the acting of the Danish/Swedish actors is phenomenal again, and they all know how to convey the emotion and struggles of their characters. Not everyone is a fan of the directing choices and the camera work, but I think it always gives Bier's films something penetrating and authentic.

My second Susanne Bier after Brodre. Then I wasn't quite convinced. This Haevnen is better, but not equally enthusiastic everywhere. The basic idea that responding to violence with violence, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth as you please, is quite strong. Admittedly, it is quite moralistic, but it does catch on.

The script was okay with the switch between two separate worlds, one on the heimat and one in the refugee camp. Still, I can't shake the impression that I don't think both stories - despite the same theme - don't fit together. The transition is too abrupt, which takes me too much out of one and the other story. Let's just call Christian a deranged boy who suffers greatly from the death of his mother. Sometimes it's a little too thick. Also the forgiveness with that garage is then the other created extreme. The interaction with Elias is fascinating to follow and you know it will get out of hand. Quite predictable too. Of course there are passers-by at the attack. Scene reminded me of The butterfly effect. Back then the clock could be turned back, but not now.

Then I found the scenes in Africa more serene, harder and more realistic. The vow of Hippocrates versus the right to life of a cruel mass murderer with extra pigment who, among other things, your nursing staff has been a victim of the patient's crimes. So mixed feelings about the film, but enough to talk about thinking. So a decent 3.5*.
