Korean schizo graphic

My final conclusion was that I spent practically 90% of the film staring at the bottom of the screen. My lack of Korean meant I spent the entire time looking at the subtitles, something I almost never do with movies.

I didn't find the film itself all that spectacular. The story is emotionally charged. A woman is psychologically and physically abused on an island with a backward family, likely plagued by inbreeding. A city girl who goes on a mandatory vacation and revisits the island. Her grandparents lived there, and she met the girl Bok-nam there. She realizes that Bok-nam is a plaything in the hands of the men and a willing slave to the older women. However, she reacts with utter indifference to their cries for help. The situation takes a turn when Bok-nam's daughter dies during her husband's rage. This is the prelude to a killing spree from which no one is spared.

Visually, it looks stunning. The setting and atmosphere on the island. The two women themselves deliver brilliant performances. Strong characters that emotionally touch the viewer. The rest of the cast balances between "not particularly bad" and "terribly bad." The men, in particular, sometimes play truly abominable roles. The massacre is rather soft and dated. Images that reminded me of "The Last House on the Left" from 1977. Not in terms of content, but certainly in terms of visuals.

I wouldn't call it horror. More of a psychological thriller, with an ending that's completely over the top and rather nonsensical. All in all, not a film that immediately blew me away or left a lasting impression.

1*

A powerful drama with horror elements that builds slowly but perfectly. A clear look at the how and why after Bok-nam is attacked by everyone around her, abused by her husband who also has sex with another woman, and then, thanks to her husband, loses her daughter. As mentioned before, the buildup is long, but it certainly doesn't feel too long. It's never boring. After that long buildup, the film shifts gears and the bloodshed arrives with, among other things, a severed head and Bok-nam's death after the recorder is rammed into her neck. Although the film isn't thrilling, it holds your attention for the entire duration. The acting, especially from Bok-nam, was strong.

So...late...but definitely worth it. A powerful dramatic film that's not only chilling in its bloody revenge scenes but also in its social aspects and compassion. A surprisingly good one! 8/10
