The Wicker Man plot

"Flesh to touch...Flesh to burn! Don't keep the Wicker Man waiting!"

A Christian police inspector investigates the disappearance of a 12-year-old girl. For this he travels to a Scottish island, where the inhabitants appear not to have much interest in the disappearance. Over time, it appears that the residents have a rather special attitude to life, including extreme nature worship, free sex and witchcraft. All this under the watchful eye of the eccentric Lord Summerisle.

Despite all the praise for this film, The Wicker Man (1973) never caught my eye. I think the film is too British, too quirky for that. Now there's nothing wrong with off-beat horror movies (they're even my favorite), but somehow The Wicker Man just isn't my cup of tea. Despite almost single-handedly introducing the pre-Christian/pagan horror genre, and the fine acting of Christopher Lee (who was even an ardent advocate of the film), the ludicrousness of Sergeant Howie's (Edward Woodward) character is notable. ) and Britt Ekland's naked dance scene is completely wrong for me.

Which is not to say that Brits can't make horror movies; far from. But I just have more affinity with films like The Innocents (1961) or Night of the Demon (1957) than with pagan straw men. Matter of taste.

The Wicker Man is nice to have seen, and contains many good elements, but is sometimes also largely a product of its time. The counterculture, free hippie behavior, sexual freedom and revolution, etc. are fresher themes with the 60s just behind us, and Catholicism vs. paganism is a pretty specific contradiction that doesn't interest me much. At times I was at least as annoyed by the stiff-necked police inspector, whose brain nearly explodes when he sees naked people, as I was by the pagan cult itself. So few sympathetic characters, although a young, or, uh, middle-aged Christopher Lee is charismatic as always. By far the most colorful character.

Despite these negatives, there is fortunately a very nice atmosphere. Visually or technically perhaps not the most beautifully filmed print of all time, but the images evoke a certain mystery and a creepy atmosphere under the skin. Normally I'm not into excessive music and vocals in film, but to my surprise it worked great here. All great folkloric songs that add to the atmosphere. That Scottish language too, delicious. It is also clear where recent films like Midsommar got their money's worth, so it's a fairly influential horror film that has withstood the time quite well (in terms of atmosphere anyway). 3.5*.
