"Life was full of sound and fury and in the end it signified nothing"...

True and Woody Allen makes his typical "pass the nose" comedy from which I watched with amusement.

Not a great Woody Allen, but I'd much rather see that than many of those American products that are forced to be funny.

The evergreens are always a welcome bonus at Woody, now with "Wish upon a Star" performed in soft 1940s style.

Excellent acting.

An imperfect film, in the most literal sense of the word. It hangs together like loose sand, while the theme - sooner or later all illusions will be deceived - is drilled in without too much subtlety. That's probably the big flaw of the film, we know far too early where it will all go in the end. That doesn't have to be a problem in principle, but the solutions that Allen offers - Gosh, an up-and-coming seventy who marries a whore half his age, turns out not to be so happy in that marriage after all[/spoiler ] - show very little creativity.

That need not be disastrous either, if Allen had brightened up this print with a variety of humorous one-liners, but that is hardly the case either. The eye-catcher on that aspect, a haggard old woman who cannot resist the temptations of a hypocritical fortune teller due to her divorce, is more tiring than fun. There is also not a single surprising element or interesting development in that thread; it goes from bad to worse and that's it. The same applies to the other storylines to a lesser extent: the last half hour is actually completely redundant, because the viewer can map them out so seamlessly in the first half hour. Then you hope to be surprised somewhere along the way, by the sharp mind that all of us Woody normally is, but surprisingly that doesn't happen at all. Perhaps the least of him I've seen so far.

Not unkind. I wanted to say: attempt at a Woody Allen pastiche... Until I just now see that it is a Woody Allen film. What a lot of cliches. Old guy tries to look young (very-very good Hopkins), mom who seeks it in spirituality (already a cliché in a cliché), young woman who likes boss, writer who tries to make it. Excellent acting saves the film. No judgment at the end, not even a finish on how things will turn out except... the two meeting each other in being spiritual and confused. Sometimes the illusion is better etc.
