Probably Clint Eastwood's worst movie. Boring, unfunny and uninteresting.

Nice film about Bronco Billy and his itinerant western show. The subject may seem a bit old-fashioned, but the film certainly knows how to entertain. Airy and charming, but with a more serious undertone here and there. The interplay of the initially bickering Clint Eastwood and Sondra Locke is fine. A narrow 3.5 stars.

I do remember when I used to hate this - along with the Philoe Beddoe movies. Not a tough Clint with a big revolver and witty one-liners, but a loser on the fringes of the US - the land of unlimited possibilities and the American Dream. Now I think these movies are the best Clint has ever made. There is so much more than the America of dirty harries, superheroes and blockbusters, and it is precisely these films that show it so beautifully and with enormous warmth.

Bronco Billy and his buddies are a good example of this, although it is explained a little too literally about two thirds of the film. Still, it doesn't detract from the power of the story - all misfits are welcome in Bronco Billy's circus, and anyone who joins it or sits in the audience as a spectator becomes part of the family, there's no escaping it. The other side of the American Dream - it doesn't matter what you've accomplished, what matters is where you belong.

That it is played well is actually already beyond any doubt - where it seems so, I have the strong impression that the script and direction demand it so. For example, the somewhat special way in which Billy and Antoinette interact - but that's exactly how I've always wondered what exactly they saw in each other. Yet it is there, unmistakably, and that is also why the film is so strong. Much more natural than we are used to, that is also an aspect of it.

Cinematographically it is all a bit safe and tame, but we are used to that from Clint - solid craftsmanship, but no surprises. There are other movies for that.
