The Tin Star plot
"For $40 a month and a shiny Tin Star...the young sheriff faced the mob alone...except for the angry ex-sheriff who couldn't watch him die and a hero-worshipping boy who lived only for the day he'd wear a TIn Star of his own!"
Cynical ex-sheriff Morgan "Morg" Hickman has become a bounty hunter. Morg brings a corpse to town and demands his bounty. The people don't want to know about him, but the young and inexperienced temporary sheriff Ben Owens wants to gain experience with him. Owens wants to learn how to handle situations where he comes into conflict with civilians. Morg starts a relationship with Nona Mayfield, a young woman who has a child by an Indian. It doesn't make Morg any more popular, until it turns out that some outlaws (the McGaffey brothers) have robbed the stagecoach, killing one and murdering popular GP 'Doc' McCord.

Prima Western: predictable story, but great for being filmed in widescreen and in beautiful black and white. As is, for example, the widescreen Western 'Forty Guns', a joy to watch. Color would only distract.
And in this Western too, Henry Fonda impresses again (His voice sounds a bit higher on the R-2 PAL DVD than on R-1 NTSC DVDs, which I watch the most.)
There could have been more chemistry between Fonda and Betsie Palmer, but they are also at least 21 years apart.
At first it takes some getting used to Perkins in a sheriff role. It might be nice to see him play a 'normal' role for a change.
Lee van Cleef is OK again in a 'Jack Elam role' as the eternal bandit.
Excellent DVD transfer (R-2NL), just no extras.
Movie: 7/10, transfer: 9/10, eventually IMDB *8/10.

A beautiful western again from Anthony Mann, who proves time and time again to be a real craftsman in this genre. He always succeeds in giving his characters something extra and, above all, something sympathetic. In addition, they get the necessary depth and the action should not be missed. The Tin Star also contains all of these ingredients and again they are well mixed.
Henry Fonda plays a strong role here as a bounty hunter. The natural predominance and tranquility that he radiates here automatically provide a certain kind of authority. In addition, the man has so much charisma that a role like this is also made for him. I initially thought Anthony Perkins was a striking choice for a role in a western, but he fills in the role of an inexperienced sheriff very well. Mann deepens the story bit by bit and brings it up to speed in the second half. The only shortcoming of these kinds of stories is that they are somewhat predictable, but I don't mind that at all here.
There are still a few nicely shot action scenes, where I especially liked how Fonda at one point literally smoked out the two villains. Anyway, the cinematography here is perfectly fine. I also quite liked the ending. The Tin Star is already very solid in the base, but is pushed to considerable heights by the development of the story and the interpretation of the characters.
