David is a young orphan on his way to California. He falls into the hands of the itinerant quack and con man Baltimore Dan. Later, David, who has become an accomplished thief, is adopted by the eccentric Homer "Doc" Brown and his wife Samuella. Doc is a retired miner and pharmacist. Doc and David quickly become good friends. But when both discover a hidden treasure, the idyllic friendship between them comes under serious strain.
