Karl Kramer (Heinz Rühmann) is a popular waiter at a hotel restaurant on the Baltic Sea and engaged to Grete Wernicke (Karin Hardt), his boss's daughter. Karl has great ambitions and in the winter months he can work as a waiter in one of the best shops in Berlin. By chance and misunderstanding, he gains access to the highest circles and falls under the spell of the wealthy Lu Donon (Sybille Schmitz). Now, of course, no one is allowed to discover what profession he actually practices.
