I once saw this movie on a regular CRT television many years ago and then it didn't make a special impression on me, everything quite dark and all. Now rewatched in HD today and only now it is fully open. Superb acting, especially from Denzel and Angelina. He's almost as strong as Seven, an out-of-the-ordinary film. Nice story and not too hard to follow. It now gets 5 stars from me. Glad I made the effort to watch it again

Washington still has a baby face in this film, special because his voice is the one that hasn't changed for 15 years. It took me a while to get used to it in the beginning. Furthermore, Washington has a somewhat thankless role, but since the entire film revolves around that, I can hardly really criticize it.
Some strange supporting roles for Rooker, Latifa and Ed O'Neill (who did that casting), Jolie is also a little bit more as a blue helper and is not much more than an extension of Washington. In terms of casting, it's all pretty mediocre.
Story doesn't mean much either. Serial killer that leaves clues. Brace yourself for a bonded twist at the end that adds little to a classic "we're getting closer" story of 2 hours.
Noyce takes it bitterly little. The scenes around Washington are a bit dull and boring, the scenes with Jolie lack the tension and intrigue that a movie like this should carry. What remains is a film that looks reasonable, but is difficult to justify for its two hours.
One in the "forgotten again" category.

A film whose genre hits you personally. If you're a thriller fan, this movie is definitely recommended. When I first saw the film, I was a huge fan of the Washington-Jolie duo. From a stubborn detective who gives orders, he can be seen as a mentor who takes the still-trained Jolie under the arms as a pupil and with success. With each murder you see the duo come closer together, which nicely illustrates the chemistry between the 2 throughout the film.
This film also contains a nice storyline, firstly because of the hints that are left with the murders in which pupil Jolie passes on her data to Washington, who can use his ready knowledge to track down the serial killer. Secondly, the hints that ultimately lead to a book from which the killer takes his inspiration. Without the hints, Washington-Julie won't make it to the book.
Including the mystical atmosphere in solving these murders such as an underground metro station, finding remote roads makes this film a true thriller. Despite this praise, this film has a somewhat disappointing ending. Unexpected and perhaps a bit far-fetched. But because at the end the interaction between the two main characters is put in the spotlight even more because you see throughout the film that Jolie evolves her knowledge as a forensic expert thanks to Washington, this ending is certainly compensated.
