Fresh and enjoyable comedy (from the time when 10-year-olds didn't know the first thing about it) with only a few deep breaths and with lessons, anecdotes, and jokes for young and old.

Well-intentioned and successful.

Very fun French comedy / family film which I happened to see on television yesterday with Dutch voiceovers. That might not even be a disadvantage, since I don't speak French anyway.

The cheerful story is well put together, and the same goes for the execution. There is plenty to enjoy and laugh at, and visually (especially the costumes and sets) it all looked very fine with its 50s/60s look. The clothing worn by the children, in particular, was beautifully and nicely done. The children (especially Damien Ferdel as the know-it-all and tattletale) act very well and are funny in this film, but the adults also do a good and entertaining job, particularly Kad Merad as Nicolas's father and Sandrine Kiberlain as the teacher, who didn't look bad either.

Kids' movies aren't usually my thing, but this one was definitely worth watching, and I even watched it with two children who enjoyed it too. Whenever there were some mildly romantic moments (like the father and mother kissing), the oldest child kept shouting "boring "

A soooo wonderful movie !!

Visually, I find this simply perfect: the clothing (the students' costumes), the cars, the interior of the houses (the TV set!), and the school... Back to the 60s (?); but so beautiful and brightly colored that you never think you are watching an old movie.

The characters fully confirm that atmosphere; the strict teacher and the school inspector: clichés at their finest, just like the students: the smartest, the dimwit, the fat kid who sits snacking all day, the 'glasses wearer'...

The story isn't much to speak of, but it doesn't need to be: it is a succession of jokes that ensures the smile doesn't leave your face right from the start of the film.

All in all, the strongest point is perhaps the group of actors: a gang of (I think mostly unknown) children who perform like adults—without wanting to detract from the work of Merad and Lemercier.

The school and home environments are just a little nicer, more atmospheric, and cozier than the search for the One-Eyed Bandit. Otherwise, I would have considered 5* here...

Of course it's for young people too, but: more 'comedy' than 'family'! And a lot better than the sequel, which I saw a year ago...
