An American in China plot

22-year-old David Braddock is not sure which direction to take with his life. His parents want him to go to China for the sake of their family business, and in the end he agrees to this wish. In China it turns out to be completely different from what he expected, but nobody takes him seriously there either. David travels to a traditional village and meets Mei Yang, an ambitious girl determined to go to college. David gets into a relationship with her. However, upon his return to San Francisco, he finds that the family business is in trouble. At the urging of his friend, he returns to China to understand the importance of both his business and his love life...
