"He had a lust for life. Sometimes he was brutal, sometimes delicate – always he lived with insatiable passion!"

Vincent van Gogh is the typical misunderstood, tormented artist. His obsession with painting and his psychological problems lead to an unhappy life full of failures. He gains some respect from his fellow painters, especially Paul Gauguin, but does not get along with them. He only sells one painting in his entire life. His only support is his brother Theo.

Pretty good film. Quinn won an Oscar for his role, but Kirk Douglas really delivers one of the finest performances of his oeuvre here. I found the artistic struggle particularly effectively portrayed, with Van Gogh's style as a painter being displayed very well. Minelli delivered a small masterpiece with Lust for Life.

I was at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam recently. For years, when I still lived in the city, I avoided it – mainly to steer clear of the hordes of tourists. So now I finally got to see it from the inside. And that is actually quite impressive, when you consider how poor Vincent remained completely unknown and unappreciated during his lifetime, whereas now people from all over the world come to see his paintings. Absurd, really.

Anyway, having become somewhat curious, I looked up this film. And it turns out to be a particularly beautiful one, not only because of the attention paid to the visuals and locations, but more than that, especially because of the good casting of Douglas, who comes across as particularly believable. Although I don't think he bears a very strong resemblance to Van Gogh's self-portraits.

Good film about the life of the painter Vincent van Gogh. The film succeeds well in portraying the psyche of the tormented mind of the main character. Kirk Douglas is smartly cast in terms of appearance, but otherwise delivers a fine performance. Beautiful use of color, making the film a feast for the eyes. Just under 4.0 stars.

Fun location work too, especially to see a few shots of where I grew up.
