Kiss of the Spider Woman plot

Two men share a cell in a South American prison: Luis Molina for allegedly seducing a minor and Valentin, a journalist with ties to an underground movement. The two are opposites and try to cope with their fate in their own way. To dispel the boredom, Luis tells about one of his favorite movies.

Beautiful, lots of subtle chemistry between the main characters. The films Molina describes make the story a beautiful mixture between reality and fiction, it all reminded me a bit of The Fall. It is of course dramatic throughout the film, but I would have preferred the ending to be a little more hopeful. Fantastic, this movie will stay with me for a while.

4*

Babenco's best known, Hurt's best.

The film is set in a prison in Sao Paulo. Two cellmates, a gay man who was caught having sex with a minor, and a political dissident who was tortured into confessions, become each other's mainstay. I think it's all William Hurt who plays the clock in this film. Truly a role played to the extreme. His complex character raises many questions afterwards. Ultimately, the film is a contemporary version of the "movie in the movie" that Molina tells Valentin also a good role of the much too early deceased Raul Julia. Beneath the surface, Babenco's drama (based on a book) is also anti-government criticism of the dictatorial regimes Brazil has had to endure. Prisons and repression are always in the picture in his films. I found other films by him, namely Pixote (3.5*) and Carandiru (4*) to make a deeper impression, therefore 3*.

Very good and strong film, with William Hurt as well as Raul Julia. One of the reasons I wanted to review this movie is of course because of William's death. He and Raul play 2 prisoners, 1 for a sex crime and the other for political reasons and the dead every now and then, Luis (Hurt) tells us about his favorite movies. For the rest, things happen to the two men, and that makes this film absolutely worth watching.
