Was a bit skeptical beforehand, especially Jodie Foster in a Western seemed a bit miscast to me. However, she can also handle these kinds of roles and together with poker player Mel Gibson and James Garner they experience a very nice adventure. The jokes aren't great, but the typical western atmosphere is nice. The poker climax at the end was okay too. The film should have ended there, but now it took just a little too long.

Way too long winded for what it is.

I think the best humor is in the dialogues, the funny replies and the allusions. What was meant to be visual humor seemed too much of the "already seen" type to me.

The protagonists are good in their roles as clever deceivers.

You would think that this new collaboration between Richard Donner and Mel Gibson after the Lethal Weapon movies would bring something good, but it's not a great western comedy. The humor in particular was not up my alley ... the duo of scammers Maverick-Annabelle trying to put each other in the spotlight is too much in the spotlight, because they need $25,000 entry fee for the poker tournament they want to participate in, but have a long way to go not enough. Jodie Foster doesn't fit the bill for me and her presence quickly becomes irritating. I also found the whole scene with that Indian impossible to air.
Positive notes, on the other hand, were Danny Glover's small appearance as a mugger, pulling out the "I'm too old for this shit" line again, and the whole poker game on the steamboat. The twists at the end were way too far fetched. Mediocre.
