Not the masterpiece I was hoping for and what the film has come to resemble because of the awards. But a fascinating film.

One of the most striking things is that it is suggested everywhere that the film would be so subtle, but Das Weisse Band is just not that. The petty, the sweeping of nasty things under the rug, the contradiction between the morality preached and the practical, it is all there in fairly thick layers. What I had hoped for was a subtle look at the origin of evil (that's what Haneke herself suggested in an interview), I didn't find that.

Still, I thought it was an interesting movie. The kind of movie I was fascinated to watch for the full playing time. And yet it felt a subcutaneous tension, as if you were watching a demise story of a German village. Where you know that the train is going off the rails, but not what and how. With many strong actors.

The pointer is positive, but there is a much better movie hidden in the themes. I certainly don't think this is Haneke's best film and I certainly wouldn't have given it the Golden Palm, my top 10 2009 didn't make it either.

3.5*

The particularly beautiful cinematography is by far the most striking aspect of this film, which in terms of story does not rise above the level of an average regional novel. I find the rushed ending a joke.

Similar films as L'Albero degli Zoccoli (1978) and Pelle Erobreren (1987) appeal to me much more.

That this film shows the origin of a WWII generation feels a bit far-fetched, even though Haneke has confirmed it herself.

On the contrary, I saw it more as a modern look at the time and mores of über-folkloristic (Northern) Germany from the literary novels of Mann and Storm, for example. Interspersed with the director's hobbyhorses.

And in that sense extremely successful.
