Long time no see. This very first attempt by Spielberg at the serious film has gone down the wrong way for many. Still, this is a small masterpiece due to the great acting of just about everyone. Goldberg and Glover in the first place, but also Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery are beautiful. This sad story about Celie, who was used as an object for most of her life by a mean husband, gripped my throat again. It is also a story in which you see the world around Celie gradually become more beautiful and emancipated. The very sentimental ending tastes like honey, but closes this sometimes heavy film about the heavy life of the black "commoners" with a hopeful feeling that the bad in this world can always be banned.

Oh dear. Spielberg is primarily a director who makes entertaining films but has also made some beautiful serious films. Obviously this is one of his first as he obviously doesn't know how to do it yet.

Mainly because everything is so exaggerated. Music always fits the mood and immediately swells when it becomes happy or sad. But especially the acting is a horror with not only mediocre performances but above all because of everyone's overacting. From just screaming to an abundance of pouty lips. And then also Oprah is a rather exaggerated role (really, she can't act, she also proved that this year in The Butler), Glover in a boring cliché role and Avery who also comes into the film quite screaming with that smile.

Anyway, there are still some pretty nice scenes in it, sometimes it is shot nicely warm (but also too often very boring), editing is good and the story is not that bad. Also the second half (right from when I had to turn the disc actually) is a lot better and more subtle. As if Spielberg learned how to deal with such a drama during the films themselves. Unfortunately he already lost me by the first part and then the film is really too long. 1,5

It is well portrayed, but the film is too sentimental to be completely good.

The music was appreciated.
