True Memoirs of an International Assassin plot

"The man. The myth. The memoirs."

Sam Larson (Kevin James) is a mild-mannered would-be writer who becomes mistaken for a hit man when his fictional novel about an international hit man is published as a true story. When the book turns out to be a great success, he is suddenly kidnapped. He is smuggled out of the country and forced to join an assassination plot. Sam is now in his main character's world and must merge into his character's role in order to survive.

Pretty good action comedy. The story is pure nonsense but a nice coat rack for a mindless action comedy. The momentum is good and there is plenty of action. The jokes are quite fun at times and James is fine in his role. The action scenes look neat, although they are sometimes quite hard for a light-hearted action comedy. Visually, the film also looks good. Fun mindless entertainment. 3.0

Kevin James, it may be clear that I really like him in a movie like Mall Cop and he's not the reason in this movie that it doesn't get off the ground and even started to get sleepy in the 2nd half.

What then is the reason? Sparse jokes, far too little pace, totally uninteresting opponents and a co-star who is clearly only in the film because of her good looks but that even her character is written lazy and boring. Even with her appearance, the makers couldn't do anything exciting, almost clever how they could do so little with enough potential.

Movies from 80 years ago did this even better, just take a look at a Road film by Crosby & Hope from the 40s and even there the movie pace is a lot faster than in this failed attempt.

1.5* for the few successful jokes and the reasonable first 30 minutes.

Unfortunately.

Pfft.

What can I say about this? It's all been done worse before, but this isn't good either. Kevin James does his best, but eventually gets lost in a formulaic work. The humor, in which he reluctantly becomes the puppet of various dubious figures, does not quite come out. Countless secondary characters are mandatory numbers, just think of an Instagram doll as a 'tough' sidekick or Andy Garcia as a cigar-smoking guerrilla leader. Not a hopeless case, but rather uninspired.
