Sands of Iwo Jima plot

"A great human story... makes a mighty motion picture!"

New Zealand, 1943. Sergeant John Stryker prepares a group of young Marines for war. Stryker is a hard and experienced man and is not gentle with the boys, who hate him. Peter especially hates him, because Stryker reminds him of his late father, who always called him a coward and claimed he wasn't man enough to become a Marine. Although Stryker tries his best, Peter remains cool and hostile. On a very dangerous assignment, Peter must team up with Stryker.

John Wayne, a sergeant with a real attitude, commands a battalion fighting the Japanese in the Pacific. He's a rather authoritarian, dorky character, and I was curious to see if he'd improve his personality. He clashes with one of his men, who has a much friendlier outlook on life. Other characters from that battalion are also featured, but it lacked much depth. Anyway, the film is still worth watching just for John Wayne.

However, I did feel like I was watching Pearl Harbor in the 1940s. It has unintentionally hilarious moments, with some misplaced dramatic moments here and there. The film also has a romantic side plot that thankfully isn't too distracting. The action scenes (using stock footage) look pretty decent, and oh yeah, that iconic shot of the soldiers raising the flag atop Iwo Jima's mountain is in there too.

A young John Wayne in a film that was actually about five years too late, as it could easily have been a recruitment film for the US Marines. And with some archive footage of the "real" fighting on the unfortunate island, you'll have to be careful to pick that out.

It all has very little to do with what really happened on Iwo Jima. You'd be better off watching Clint Eastwood's duo of films for that, and even there, it's a far cry. The only thing this film offers is some contemporary gung-ho, and Wayne's haircut. And those original images, of course.
