The Boat That Rocked plot

"On air. Off shore. Out of control."

In 1966, the BBC played rock and roll music for just 2 hours a week. A group of DJs changed that. With Radio Rock they hurled rock 'n roll and pop music into the air 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from a pirate ship in the North Sea. In no time, the illegal pirate channel grew into a phenomenon that as many as 25 million people, more than half of the English population, listened to every day. Young and old, women and men. The station brought about a musical revolution and the DJs grew into unprecedented heroes and sex symbols. From the moment that the government did everything in its power to take this 'pernicious station' off the air, their popularity grew to unprecedented heights.

Rock and rollercoaster

Just like a rollercoaster, The Boat that Rocked is a predictable but no less fun ride that mainly entertains and gives you energy. The characters are a motley crew played by a skilled cast that evokes the 60's feel, supported by Curtis' decoration of the boat. In my opinion it is also good that the attitude of the government towards these boats/lifestyle comes to the fore.

I'm not a real fan/connoisseur of Rock 'n' roll but even for the layman the music is a fantastic part of this film, absolutely enhancing the atmosphere.

Ensemble piece that preys much too emphatically on a warm feel good vibe, by artificially avoiding anything that can generate even the slightest melancholy. Also the interpersonal relations on the boat must not contain an ounce of cynicism, as a result of which The Boath That Rocked remains directionless on the surface for a long time. Only the government that wants to ban the channel could have provided the necessary momentum to the plot, but that is sold at such a Piet Piraat level that the film just doesn't get any momentum. Nice to float then? Unfortunately, the humor lacks the necessary sharpness and the characters are not explored enough in depth. Only the score is good.

“Remember folks, "It ain't simple bein' cool, but it's cool bein' simple."”

The film itself is a bit too long, and certainly not all subplots and characters are equally interesting. But who cares when you have such great music and actors like Seymour Hoffman, Nighy, Frost and O'Dowd staying on a boat together and playing music all the time. Rock 'n' roll music, which was seen as 'wrong' in the 70s. It is a joy to see all those actors together and the fun radiates from it. The fact that the film itself is not perfect is a lot less disturbing. The Boat That Rocked is also one of the few films that needs a stand in the cinema.
