Logan wants Gal for a break-in in London, and he won't take no. Yet that's the answer Gal continues to give, no matter how much Logan threatens.

what a very strange movie.

At the start of the sunbathing Gal I'm getting ready for a nice English crime comedy. with the crime it disappoints in terms of action, at least, that's not what it should be about, it remains with 'events'. there is no dynamic story, the film is slow, there are no quick camera changes (except for a scene here and there), some scenes can even be called clinical and there are even spacious silences. the film's strength lies in the strange tensions between the characters, the kind of awkwardness of a non-hollywood approach, the dialogues and last but not least the role of Kingsley. When I see his head I unconsciously automatically think of Gandhi and then the behavior of his character is strange from the first moment, but in a positive way.

all in all, an undynamic film with special characters and a nice strange tension.

For a long time Lock Stock & Snatch were number 1 & 2 as favorite English gangster film, only missed this one by Glazer. Maybe watch it again to declare him as definitive number 1 but he is already pretty close. Great interplay of Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley that sparkles with fun. Regularly crooked around these two while it is certainly not all that funny. Top!

You should know Jonathan Glazer from the cool video clips he has made for things like Radiohead's Street Spirit and Karma Police, UNKLE's Rabbit in the Headlights and Massive Attack's Karmacoma.
They know how to touch you with the deep message and the surreal shades. Did he manage to get that back with Sexy Beast?

Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley know how to play each other's opponents in a great way. Winstone plays Gal, who has fled London and found his peace in a Spanish no man's land. But unfortunately his peace is disturbed when Logan (Kingsley) comes along, who tries to bring him back for an important job in the homeland. Gal doesn't like that and as you know then the problems begin.

But it's not standard. Sexy Beast eventually manages to become a beautiful mind fuck and the surreal shades are certainly reflected in this. Could that rabbit in Gal's nightmares be a pre-Donnie Darko by the way? What kind of mindfuck, you'll have to experience that for yourself.

Nice job anyway. Quirky, dry, hilarious and bizarre. Glazer later proved that with Under the Skin. Same here...

4.0*
