Emmanuelle Devos is again very convincing; this time in the role of a revenge-seeking mother who, in her quest, gains some defining experiences, including recognizable situations, and draws conclusions from them.

Definitely not a top film. Occasionally a bit rushed in the development of the story, but the revenger is a woman, a human being above all and not a super-women and that was especially appreciated.

Emanuelle Devos is the center of this intense psychological drama. She dominates the film with her presence. She plays an obsessive woman who feverishly chases after straws in order to finally get satisfaction for the tragic death of her son. She portrays her character so convincingly that the viewer is tempted to identify with her morbid possession and to unravel a web of guilt and retribution from her perspective. .

Devos has a major opponent in Nathalie Baye. Their first scene together is a beautiful scene in which deep tragedy and uncomfortable tension alternately get under your skin. In that scene, director Frédéric Mermoud shows that he very skillfully combines suppressed emotion and penetrating drama. The setting on Lake Geneva is particularly atmospheric and subtly reflects the lost feeling of Devos. The alternately rough and rustic images of the lake and Devos' acting violence evoke a magnificently dark atmosphere in which despair, loneliness and deep sadness can simmer and explode.

The framing and emotionality are fine. The story, on the other hand, evokes less compelling feelings because it runs along familiar lines. The tension that Mermoud is able to evoke, especially at the beginning of the film, is therefore unable to maintain it throughout the entire film. Nevertheless, Moka is ultimately a good film, which will be remembered mainly because of the magnificent atmosphere and the performances of Devos and Baye.
