There is anything and everything with this film, but really not all of it. Just not funny, just not exciting and above all just not interesting. The story is simply not interesting for that and the characters may look nice but also not convincing.

I think more could have been done with this. In terms of atmosphere, it's fine and enough variety of content between, for example, humor and action scenes. Still, it doesn't feel quite right as a whole, because the film isn't exactly exciting and some cast members acted very weakly (Steve was very weak). In contrast, John C. Reilly played a strong role as Crepsley.

Anyway, finished a bit too childish, although I have no idea whether the original book is a children's book (probably) or a book with little childish material. But seeing this is probably the first thing that immediately comes to mind.
Massoglia doesn't seem to dare, and doesn't really know how to play any emotion. This makes his dialogues all come out very neutral, as if he doesn't feel like it or is just too shy. But then as a director you really have to put a stop to that.
Especially because Hutcherson seems to want to, and then Massoglia is only slightly behind. Reilly is actually the only one with real charm, although I can't complain much about the adults. Except for Hayek, she remains mediocre. The film is often questionably childish, with types that are very exaggerated. Especially Dafoe looks drowsy, also gets too little to do anything with.
The effects look wooden, very wooden. This already partly takes you out of the fantasy atmosphere, which is well done the first hour. The first hour also has the best editing, because everything that comes after that quickly gets boring, something that shouldn't be in a fantasy film. The scenes of the spider in the school hallway or Reilly with the moon in the background in the cemetery are visual outliers. The rest is woody and dull.
It also feels a bit rushed and cluttered, with subjects actually being laughed at rather than being emotional or sympathetic to them. Some of the pieces are just mediocre on beauty too, like the monkey-tailed girl who could have freed herself with her tail much sooner.
It all feels messy, dull and bad, although there are sometimes really nice parts. Hutcherson and Massoglia should have switched roles, so let the shy boy excel more in bad roles. Too bad, this just could have been better.
