Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens
Very well made 'silent' horror film. Nosferatu really has a fantastic score, and the music slowly pulls you into the film. It creates an almost unparalleled atmosphere. Nice for a film from 1922. Dismal and uncomfortable, but also atmospheric and beautifully composed. It all looks a bit dated, but it's nice that it is sometimes more exciting and scary than some contemporary horror films. Also because of the excellent acting of the actors.

The deadship has a new captain.
What a beautiful expressionist film. This horror film, based on Bram Stoker's Dracula, has to rely on form (the script is simple). Dreamy images of a village and a trip to Transylvania are accompanied by appropriate classical music. The film is almost 100 years old but Count Orlok is at times so terrifying it gives me goosebumps. The shadow effects of the count are also a feast for the eyes.

Since the producers were not allowed to use the title Dracula, it became Nosferatu - a term from Romanian folklore for a humanoid vampire. Bram Stoker used the word in his horror novel.
At Murnau, the vampire legend becomes a conflict between Light and Darkness. The screen is lit by an ellipse that can grow and shrink. When she is riding through the forest in Transylvania, a negative image is shown so that the horses have white eyes. Sometimes you only see the menacing silhouette of the vampire - very recognizable with elongated, crooked fingers, a hump and a hawk nose. A blue color filter is used for the nighttime outdoor scenes; a pink before dawn. Such a sunrise is fatal to the creature of Darkness.
The use of crosscutting between simultaneous events was innovative. They jump back and forth from the schooner to the carriage and to the people in Germany who experience telepathic contact. The castle was in Slovakia, and it contains statues of the Baltic Sea. Presumably they used a miniature ship. Due to the relocation of Victorian England to Northern Germany, the Count had to make a huge detour by sea.
Deviations from the book are the plague, the I-narrator and the ending. The traveler is already married before his departure. Successful additions are the clock with the skeleton and the explanation of the professor. That carnivorous plant takes life from another organism, just like the undead vampire from its victims. Later, spoken versions have played a borrowing-neighbour. This visual poem remains the most burned into the retina.
