I Dreamed of Africa plot

"Sometimes the adventure of a lifetime becomes life itself."

The divorced and wealthy Kuki decides to change her life after a serious car accident. She accepts a marriage proposal from Paolo Gallmann and travels with him and her son Emanuele to Kenya to work as ranchers. Life in rural Africa is particularly hard: wild elephants and lions are a constant threat, severe storms cause a lot of damage, merciless poachers are not deterred by anything or anyone and a neighboring tribe is very suspicious of the newcomers. In addition, Paolo is often absent for days while going hunting or fishing with his friends. But Kuki isn't about to give up on her new life just like that.

Nice film about a divorced mother who remarried and moved to a ranch in Africa. Based on the life story of Kuki Gallmann. A nice story in itself, but it all remains a bit superficial. The film is easy to watch, and of course the many beautiful images of the African wilderness contribute to this.

There isn't much wrong to say about this exotic drama except that the film has little to say. Hudson is not ready to give us a taste of a romantic Africa. Rich people who chase a "dream" of Africa always feel bad to me: they hardly have anything to do except go on safari and kill animals and then be indignant about poachers who do the same thing. The typical black house helpers etc. The British nostalgia for colonialism. However, the film does not sufficiently show how hard and difficult it is to live in such a secluded area, which I think is more close to reality.

Basinger plays a nice role and shifts from her femme fatale image to the housewife type.

Despite all the setbacks, Kuki Gallmann has continued to work for the conservation of fauna, sometimes at odds with the tribes that live in her area. I read in an article that she almost died in an assassination attempt in 2017. Speaking of African dreams....

Anyone who watches this film must first and foremost realize that thanks to the enormous efforts of Kuki Gallmann, the Kenyan nature reserve Ol ari Nyiro is flourishing. Kuki protected this part of Africa and paid a terribly high price for it: the death of her husband and son. I really don't understand why there are forum members who find the film a boring and mundane story. Kuki's life has been anything but boring. She has managed to put an incredible number of horrible events into perspective. The film beautifully portrays these events without becoming overly dramatic and sentimental. I don't think it is an absolute top film, the film often made too big leaps for that for my taste. But I think 3.5* or a good enough score is appropriate.
