“Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.”

Great movie. The Color of Money has a simple story and little actually happens, but Scorsese shows his craftsmanship again with a smooth direction, wonderful music, strong characters and sharp dialogues. And of course the unparalleled acting of Paul Newman.

The man is as cool as ice as Fast Eddie, but also knows how to take you into Eddie's alcoholic excesses and downfall. Tom Cruise gets to play the flamboyant, arrogant and touchy Vincent, and the little superstar can do it like no other. Mastrantonio stands her ground in this world full of testosterone. With a nice twist at the end. Newman finally won his Oscar for this role and rightly so. Fast Eddie is the man…

I really had no idea this was going to be a sequel, but it really doesn't matter. The Color of Money is an entertaining film about a rivalry between two billiard players: the experienced Paul Newman and promising rookie Tom Cruise. Both gentlemen play very convincingly and are fun to follow. Cruise sometimes teeters on the edge of irritation, but that fits his role well. Although the film mainly revolves around these two men, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's contribution should certainly not go unnoticed. I thought her character was a nice addition.

It comes as no surprise that Martin Scorsese knows how to portray billiard matches. The somewhat stuffy 'café atmosphere' is also aptly conveyed and the soundtrack also struck me in a positive way. Despite this, the film failed to fully capture my attention from start to finish. I found the film to be a bit long-winded in the long run and to be honest, I found the final ending a bit bland. Still, overall the film is well put together and the film was captivating enough to sit out.

3*

A bit stuffy Scorsese but vintage Scorsese, yes. The camera work, the editing, the tempo (suddenly the two hours are over), the soundtrack: typical of him. But it's just not all. Cruise manages to bring too little to really counteract a strong Newman, visually very dated and the soundtrack, although typical, is just not enough. All in all a film that is quite okay, well made anyway and not really boring, but also very often slips into oblivion. Rounded up 3.0*.
