Kutcher's character reminded me at times of the sadness-soaked Leonard Kraditor from Two Lovers. But where Joaquin Phoenix plays that role with verve, Demi's toyboy fails to portray someone of flesh and blood. He doesn't go beyond the type and ruins Personal Effects a bit for me.

However, the fact that this debut by David Hollander is not a high-flyer in my opinion is not solely due to that. This print wants to present itself as a sincere piece of melancholy, while there is actually a sentimental tearjerker behind it, as is sometimes programmed on Saturday evenings.

Also on a visual level, Hollander lacks the necessary flair: the gloomy, cold colors are still okay, but the film is far too slick to really feel that cold, to be submerged in the sadness.

Not a bad product, but too sweet and cliché to leave a deep impression. I also find the acting talents of Ashton Kutcher (although better in comedic roles) too limited.

Nice story line, maybe a little too far fetched.

Falling well into the drama genre, you have to forget that Ashton is a comedian. The images of the gray and gloomy city fit well with the story.

Finished too quickly, but definitely worth watching.
