Airport '77 plot

"Flight 23 has crashed in the Bermuda Triangle... passengers still alive, trapped underwater..."

Philip Stevens flies with a group of VIPs to the grand opening of his art collection, when a group of hijackers use gas to sedate the remaining passengers. The intent of the trio is to steal the precious art treasures on board, but the whole plan falls apart when the 747 crashes in the 'Bermuda Triangle'. The plane plunges into the sea and sinks quickly to the bottom of the ocean; however, the passengers survived the blow to the water. On the mainland, a huge rescue operation is launched to bring the plane (without breaking it in two) to the surface.

One of the disaster films from the 1970s that could count on an impressive cast. Even if you see the poster. 5 Oscar winners and 2 nominees. With names like Jack Lemmon, James Stewart, Christopher Lee and Olivia de Havilland. And many other names can also present a nice palmares. Unfortunately, that doesn't work out very well here. Most names come from a different generation with a different acting style. In addition, director Jerry Jameson does not really pay much attention to the actors, but rather to the disaster itself.

The film will be especially recognizable because it is the largest source of the parody film Airplane. And I can imagine that in '77 it all still made quite an impression. But we're more normal now. Airport '77 is certainly not bad in itself, but rather a Hollywood film that has lost all its luster over the years.

Drowning in an airplane. No, in the 1970s anything was possible, as long as it was a disaster. To be honest, the combination of plane and water also makes it a very nice disaster film. With ample time, of course, to introduce all of our future victims: Jack Lemmon, Joseph Cotten, Olivia de Havilland, Christopher Lee, M. Emmett Walsch, George Kennedy, and James Stewart. Oxygen runs out, plane collapses under water pressure, hysterical women. Always exciting of course! Will they still be found in time and can they still be saved?

Typical 1970s disaster film, well made for that time. a tight 3 stars if I also take the age into account.
