"The Gun That Won The West!"
Lin McAdam, searching for his father's killer, arrives in Dodge City with his friend "High-Spade" Frankie Wilson. Lin competes in a local target shooting competition for the top prize of an 1873 Winchester repeating rifle, known as "One of a Thousand." Lin wins the pulse-pounding shooting competition, but the coveted Winchester'73 is soon stolen by runner-up Dutch Henry Brown. Dutch Henry Brown flees into the desert with the rifle. What follows is a nerve-racking and dangerous chase, with the Winchester'73 frequently changing hands.

It is not without reason that this film has become one of the greatest classics of the western genre. The idea of giving the lead role not to a person but to an object turned out to be a golden opportunity. The battle for the Winchester '73 is a special one. That starts with a very interesting, I think never seen so beautifully shooting match in which this rifle is the bet. To then see it being dragged from hot to there and also seeing the other main characters constantly move along with the gun, is beautiful to see. The life story of the gun parallels the adventures of Lin McAdam and his friend and it is, in addition to James Stewart and Millard Mitchell, Shelley Winters, Dan Duryea and Stephen McNally that make these adventures very interesting to follow. The fact that the Winchester keeps coming back feels a bit forced on the one hand, but on the other it is the strength of this unique film. The nice thing is that at the end it also becomes clear that there is still something more important than the quality of a gun: Life.

Adventurous western with a "one in a thousand gun" at stake.
Average and classic western from that time with the equally classic ingredients and the predictable ending.
You can of course enjoy the good acting of stars such as James Stewart and Shelley Winters and also look up to the young guests Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis in their small supporting roles.

I didn't have too many expectations for this movie, but it did give me great entertainment. It starts quite nicely with the shooting competition where the winner gets the Winchester '73 but the loser turns out to be very unsportsmanlike. The start of a smooth western that flies by at a fast pace with a good dose of action. Action scenes, so the shootouts, are good and especially the attack of the Indians on the camp was amazing and also very nicely portrayed. The film has beautiful environments from time to time and the acting is quite good.
