Die Gustloff plot
"Ship of No Return"
Gotenhafen, 1945. Tens of thousands of people are stranded in this port city, fleeing from the advancing Red Army. The young ship captain Hellmut Kehding (Kai Wiesinger) is ordered to bring about 1500 soldiers and as many refugees as possible to Kiel with the "Wilhelm Gustloff". Among the refugees are Lilli Simoneit (Dana Vávrová), her 16-year-old son Kalli (Willi Gerk) and the heavily pregnant Marianne (Anja Knauer). They hope to be brought to safety with the "Gustloff" like the thousands of others. In Gotenhafen Hellmut Kehding also meets his great love Erika Galetschky (Valerie Niehaus). She works under the strict regime of Berta Burkat (Ulrike Kriener) as Marva in the refugee shelter. Hellmut does everything in his power to get her on the ship too.
