Dickensian adventure film with many action scenes, in which a marquis accidentally causes the death of a worker with his carriage in the alleys of Paris around 1840. Moved by this news, he disguises himself as a worker to help the poor man's family. The gap between rich and poor is central, but it is more than that because there is also a crime conspiracy involved. Hunebelle and lead actor Jean "Fantomas" Marais were pioneers of early French action film (OSS117, Fantomas) and were not afraid to make things difficult in that area. The result is that the editing looks quite sloppy. Yet it doesn't look too clumsy; Marais did some stunts himself, including when he rescued someone from a burning house. The movie was not filmed in Paris; was not possible because "medieval" Paris already disappeared at the end of the 19th century. So the director chose Rouen to evoke the street scene of that time. After Le Bossu (3.5*), another fine example of craftsmanship.
