Thomas P. Manning, businessman and chess expert, is mysteriously shot dead in a locked room. When he is found, he has some chess pieces clutched in his hand. The police are stunned and leave the case for what it is. Six months later, Manning's daughter asks Charlie Chan to find out what happened and who is behind the murder.
