In my opinion, one of the more enjoyable Charlie Chan films, certainly in the Sidney Toler series, featuring the ever-reliable (or rather—judging by his appearance—unreliable) Marc Lawrence, a busy plot revolving around a murder from the past and a killing committed on the spot, and above all, the great location from the title. Naturally, all attention is focused on the master detective and his broken English, as well as his ambitious son, but the show is almost stolen by Charles Wagenheim as the night watchman Willie, who has entire conversations with "his" wax figures. Sidney Toler remains a somewhat colorless actor who handles Eastern aphorisms well but otherwise lacks charisma, so it is no wonder that his son mistakes him for a wax figure in the very last shot (and as a closing joke), but the film itself is busy and dynamic enough to entertain from start to finish.
