"If Jason still haunts you... You're not alone."

After the horrific events of a few years ago, in which mass murderer Jason Voorhees killed the mother of Tommy Jarvis, among others, Tommy is now in a medical clinic. Here he wants to try to heal, but at least he hopes to be rid of those nasty visions and nightmares with Voorhees. But then it turns out that the past won't leave Jarvis alone and he is again confronted with a number of gruesome murder cases.

Just another good part of the series. Unfortunately no summer camp, but this time a madhouse on a farm somewhere in the middle of the jungle works more than fine. Especially with the crazy mother and son as owners of a nearby press, their behavior steals the show.
In addition, the beginning contains one of the funniest moments in the series, where the moody wood-cutting patient nicely kicks the other in the back with an ax because he is bloody annoying with his chocolate hands. I've rewinded here quite a few times anyway just to enjoy one more time.

Also few surprises. A high body count follows (after a slower start) and despite the fact that the current murders take place offscreen, we still get to see nicely made-up corpses.

However, more could have been done with Tommy and he is indeed not even one of the most likeable protagonists (is he really?) in this series. It's also a shame that it turned out to be a copycat. Seems to go against some previous images.

3.0*

After 'The Final Chapter' of part 4, the movie continues as usual and even features the character Tommy Jarvis from that 4th part. A bit older and quite traumatized. The film also continues to circle around the old camp site. That is of course a hallmark of the franchise, but I wouldn't really call it a real New Beginning. The movie is entertainment, but it still lacks the charm of Jason Voorhees. It's really back - with what you could call an upgrade - in part 6. More than ever, this part is only for fans of the series, otherwise you won't like it. One of the weaker parts of the series.

A less good part indeed. This movie is full of moronic characters, both in the madhouse and the mother and son, who I don't find funny but annoying. John Shepherd plays a weak Tommy Jarvis who is understandably traumatized, not the strong hero from the 6th part. At the end of part 4 it is actually suggested that Tommy takes over the ax from Jason, but that turns out not to be the case. Although, at the end of this part, the viewer is again made to think the same. But in part 6 that is again ignored. I don't know if this was always the intention of the makers, or if they couldn't make up their mind.

This fifth part was very mediocre. The actors are horribly bad, the kills are very standard and lame. We have seen this several times where Jason is lying under a bed and killing someone. As expected, this continues with Tommy. Also this time a child plays with it, namely Reggie the Reckless. Then you immediately know who will survive. Because you know in advance that they don't butcher children in an American film. No, this part was very poor in quality and that ending is too crazy for words.

Again mediocre.

The series seemed to deliver a seriously nice film with the third part, although that film only got a six from me. However, that still remains better than this film, which now gets a 4 in my book. You would actually think that films with a higher budget should improve, but that is not the case here.

I must say that the film has a decent first half hour. Its main advantage is that the film wastes little time and now makes the killings happen a little faster. For example, in the first half hour we get to see a pretty special environment, where we get to see a place for "crazy". Jason himself takes a little longer before he makes his entrance, but it's still quite interesting without him.

Acting is predictably bad and despite the fact that Jason now looks a bit more menacing and bigger, it remains quite a clunky appearance that doesn't radiate anything exciting. In any case, threatening to approach the characters never comes across, and it never has. The environment, with rain and swampy swamps, does give some extras, but not to make Jason a really scary appearance here.

After an interesting first half hour, it also takes a while before the interesting murders come into play. In any case, I found a lot of murders on the boring side, and a step back from the previous part since Savini could do something better with the murders there. There is enough minced meat, but not really in a nice way.

No, this is a mediocre installment in an increasingly mediocre series. I hope that part 6 will bring something more than this part. It looks like the budget is being increased there again, but as is often the case, there is not much to notice here. Bad acting, boring kills, but a slightly better environment and a more visually appealing background.

What a bagger. The Friday the 13th series has scored quite consistently with me so far (swinging between 2.5* and 3.5*, but all entertaining), but this fifth film can count on little credit. The typical Friday vibe isn't there, and that's really the only reason this franchise is entertaining to watch. It has nothing to do with it, the killer is even just a wannabe Jason, there is no camp and no more to be seen. The characters are irritating and screaming, and that Tommy is just about the weakest protagonist ever to walk around in a movie. They'd better have called Corey Feldman back. The kills may be a bit more original and bloody, but they're certainly not entertaining. I really don't expect a high level from these films as long as they have that entertaining Friday the 13th atmosphere, and this film just falls abominably short. 1*.
