Still a decent review. Akin does exactly the same here as he does so well in Gegen die Wand. Opening up the immigrant culture in Germany and the way these people struggle with their identity. Rarely seen a film with so much culture from other countries, without this dominating the entire atmosphere of the film. Akin puts the people first, with all their problems and being Muslim (or something else) doesn't make them better or worse. It is a pity that we do not have a director in the Netherlands who knows how to portray such a world of experience so beautifully.

Furthermore, the mafia story is not convincing, but it is still nice to see how such an I-act-tough guy gets the full brunt. Also keep an eye out for the supporting roles of just about the entire Akin family. 3.5*

Debut film by Fatih Akin. Again filmed in Hamburg. I have a high opinion of Akin, but I thought he missed the ball a bit here. I found it an unconvincing film about the migration backgrounds or the mafia happenings in Germany.

The film is told from the friendships and relationships of the trio Costa, Bobby and Gabriel. It is mainly this interaction that keeps the film interesting. And a quality of Akin, as is also apparent later in his oeuvre. Great acting, but otherwise I had a hard time getting into the film.
