Raging Bull plot
"I don’t go down for nobody."
Martin Scorsese's sports epic looks back on the career of Jake La Motta (Robert De Niro). In 1941, La Motta wanted to achieve more and prepare for heavyweight boxing. He was known as a boxer who was incredibly violent and therefore unstoppable in the ring. However, the violence would soon spread to his private life.

Analyzed to death last week because of an essay on Michael Chapman (the cap of this movie) in regards to Raging Bull. There has been a lot of experimentation in this area and despite the fact that not everything works equally well (especially in the boxing scenes the extremities do work, but outside they occasionally cause a break in style), it remains a great film.

The greatest release only manifests itself when Jake LaMotta's environment is confined to the walls of his prison cell towards the end of Raging Bull . 'I am not an animal', it resounds, just like in David Lynch's cinematic cry for humanity from the same year of production.
Both in The Elephant Man and in Raging Bull the cry for help from both main characters serves as a last resort: in order not to lose their humanity, they must convince everyone that they are essentially be as human as the people around them. LaMotta, lonely as he is in his cell, mainly convinces himself; Joseph Merrick tries to convince the people who treat him like an animal. However, both victims also address us: are we also judging? Or do we feel genuine sympathy where we would normally keep our distance?

Things weren't going well for Martin Scorsese in the late 1970s. A combination of depression and a lot of cocaine use (in which cause and effect were mixed up) led him to assume that 'Raging Bull' would be his last film. He put all his energy into this biopic of boxer Jake LaMotta, a not-so-pleasant man, both in and out of the ring. Scorsese's friend Robert de Niro played the lead role with at least as much effort as the director. De Niro's weight in the film changes 27 pounds from the (real-life Jake LaMotta's) trained boxer to the slightly downtrodden nightclub entertainer LaMotta becomes after his sports career. The actor took four months to complete a 'The Trip'-like tour of the best restaurants in France and Italy. Nice job, that acting.
