Beautifully shot epic sports drama. The story about Ernie Davis is very fascinating, not only because of his sporting qualities (he also excelled in baseball and basketball) but also because of the (very narrow) racist society at the time. Very sad that someone who could make such a difference has died at such a young age.

The build-up from little Ernie to the big star of American College Football is beautifully portrayed, and the very realistic scenes on the sports field certainly deserve a compliment. The acting was solid across the board, only Quaid as a tough sports coach I found less convincing.

3.5*

Nice film about the life of the black American Football player Ernie Davis in the early 1960s. And of course he will have to deal with discrimination. Film is a bit on the long side, and not without sentiment and glory (as is usual with a sports drama). The film also looks good and the actors do not disappoint. But it is by no means innovative.

If you liked this one, you'll love Remember The Titans and Glory Road as well.

Gosh, what a high average for such a standard and clichéd sports film. There is still some racism and health problems thrown into the fray, but otherwise the film does not differ much from other sports films. In terms of acting it is Quaid who keeps the film going, the rest makes no impression. Not very refreshing and therefore not sufficient.
